Passionflower

(Passiflora incarnata)

Passionflower is an extravagant climbing vine of the American Southeast, crowned with one of nature's most intricate blooms — a fringed purple-and-white halo encircling a radiant center. Beyond its beauty, the maypop is among the most cherished calming herbs, traditionally valued for soothing nervous tension, quieting a racing mind, and inviting tranquil sleep. In teas and ceremonial blends it brings a serene, gently sedative grace and a soft, settling peace.

Tradition & Ritual

Indigenous peoples of the Americas ate the maypop's fruit and used the vine as a calming remedy long before European contact. Spanish missionaries, struck by the flower's elaborate form, read in it the Passion of Christ — the crown of thorns, the nails, the wounds — and named it accordingly, carrying the bloom into sermons and sacred art as a living emblem of devotion.

Scientific & Medicine

Passionflower contains flavonoids and alkaloids traditionally associated with calming the nervous system, easing anxiety, and supporting restful sleep. As a tea it steeps mild, grassy, and faintly sweet, long used to quiet an overactive mind and soothe restlessness. In a smoke or tea blend it lends a soft, relaxing character, blending beautifully with skullcap, chamomile, or lavender for a deeply tranquil evening brew.

Legends & Myths

The flower's name comes from Spanish missionaries who saw in its radiant corona the crown of thorns, in its ten petals the faithful apostles, and in its three stigmas the nails of the cross — a whole sermon written in a single bloom. To them it was a divine sign that the gospel was destined for the New World, the very Passion of Christ blossoming wild upon the vine.

Cautions & Contraindications

Avoid in pregnancy — it may stimulate the uterus. Can increase drowsiness with sedatives, and may interact with MAOI medications. Do not drive if it makes you sleepy.
