Rosemary

(Salvia rosmarinus)

Resinous, piney, and faintly camphorous, rosemary is the herb of memory and clear seeing. Its needle-like leaves hold a warm, woody aroma that seems to sharpen the senses and steady the mind. Long called the herb of remembrance, rosemary carries a bracing, sunlit Mediterranean spirit into any blend or brew — grounding, aromatic, and quietly invigorating, the kind of green that wakes you to the present moment.

across time

Tradition & Ritual

Sacred to Mediterranean cultures for millennia, rosemary was burned as incense in temples and laid upon graves as a pledge of remembrance. Greek scholars wore sprigs in their hair to aid recall during study. At weddings and funerals alike it bound the living to memory and to one another, while smoldering branches were used to cleanse and purify the air of homes and gathering places.

what it offers

Scientific & Medicine

Aromatic and resin-rich, rosemary is traditionally associated with mental clarity, focus, and circulation, its bright scent valued for awakening attention. It carries 1,8-cineole and rosmarinic acid among its aromatic compounds. In a blend or tea it contributes a warm, herbaceous, slightly peppery backbone — stimulating and clearing rather than sedating — a vivid green note that lends structure and a sense of alert presence.

Legends & Myths

Legend says rosemary's flowers were once white, until the Virgin Mary draped her blue cloak over a bush to dry on the flight into Egypt, blessing the blossoms forever blue. Folklore held the plant would grow only in the gardens of the righteous, and that it thrived where a strong woman ruled the house — a humble herb credited with quiet, protective power.

Bear Originals

Around the fire, rosemary is what I add when I want to remember a night clearly. A little goes far — it's bold, almost medicinal, and it pins your attention to the here and now. I keep a sprig by my desk for the same reason.

Cautions & Contraindications

Avoid large medicinal or essential-oil doses in pregnancy. Concentrated extracts may interact with some medications; culinary and blend amounts are considered safe.
