About This Product

Sweetgrass (Hierochloe odorata) is one of the four sacred medicines recognized across many Indigenous nations of North America, alongside sage, cedar, and tobacco. Where sage is often used to clear and release, sweetgrass is traditionally understood as an inviting force — its smoke said to draw in benevolent spirits, good thoughts, and positive energy. Each braid arrives approximately 20 inches long, a form that is itself ceremonial: the three sections of a sweetgrass braid are sometimes said to represent mind, body, and spirit, woven together into one.

The scent is unmistakable — a warm, grassy vanilla that comes from coumarin, the same compound that gives freshly cut hay its sweetness and that sweetgrass shares, fascinatingly, with tonka beans and woodruff. Indigenous peoples across the Great Plains, the Northeast, and the boreal north have harvested and braided sweetgrass for generations, and the plant's Lakota name, wihpeyapaha, translates roughly as "fragrant grass of the earth." To burn it is to participate in something genuinely ancient. Light one end, let it smolder, and move the smoke intentionally through your space or over objects you wish to bless. Extinguish by pressing the lit end gently against a fireproof surface — sweetgrass does not sustain a flame the way a candle does; it wants to smolder and drift.

This is a single braid, ethically sourced and offered with the reverence this elder plant deserves. Whether you are opening a ceremony, settling a space, or simply marking a moment of transition, sweetgrass is one of the oldest invitations the plant world has extended to us.

More Information

How to Use

Hold the braid at one end and light the opposite tip. Once it catches, blow out the flame and allow the braid to smolder, directing the smoke with your hand or a feather. Extinguish completely after use by pressing the lit end firmly against a heatproof surface or smudge bowl.

Storage

Keep your braid in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. A cloth bag or cedar box works beautifully — and the scent will thank you for it. Properly stored, a sweetgrass braid holds its fragrance for a long time; the coumarin compounds that give it that signature honey-hay sweetness are remarkably stable.

Pairing

Sweetgrass pairs naturally with white sage or cedar in a clearing-and-inviting sequence: release with sage, then welcome with sweetgrass. Explore our full range of ceremonial accessories and smudge offerings to build a ritual practice that feels genuinely yours.
