About This Product

White sage has been tended, revered, and burned for countless generations by the Kumeyaay and many other Indigenous peoples of the Southwest. Salvia apiana is not a trend or a wellness accessory — it is a living elder, a plant that has been quietly holding space for human ritual long before anyone thought to package it. These clusters bring that lineage into your home, your ceremony, your breath.

Our white sage grows on a steep hillside about a mile above any road, near the Santa Ysabel nation of Southern California, at roughly 4,000 feet elevation — above a natural creek, under open sky. It is consciously and carefully harvested, with real respect for the plant and the land that sustains it. Each cluster also draws on the complementary energies of wild rosemary and lavender, deepening the aromatic and ceremonial character of the smoke.

Burning sage — what many traditions call smudging — is one of the oldest forms of plant ceremony we know of. The Kumeyaay burned it in sweat-houses to help purify the body during illness, and in living spaces as a cleansing ritual for the environment. Modern laboratory research has begun to catch up with what Indigenous practitioners understood intuitively: white sage smoke has demonstrated significant antimicrobial properties in peer-reviewed studies. The elders knew. They usually do.

Use these clusters to open a ceremony, clear a space, or simply to mark a transition — the end of a hard day, the beginning of a quiet morning, the moment before something that matters. Let the smoke do what smoke has always done: carry intention upward.

How to Use

Light the tip of a cluster and allow it to catch briefly, then gently blow out the flame so the leaves smolder and smoke. Use an abalone shell or a smudge bowl to catch any falling ash. Move the smoke through your space with intention — a feather, your hand, or simply your breath. When finished, press the burning end firmly against a fireproof surface to extinguish fully.

Sourcing & Stewardship

Wild white sage is under real pressure from over-harvesting. Ours is grown and tended in a conscious garden setting near the Santa Ysabel nation — not stripped from wild populations. Buying cultivated sage is one small, meaningful way to honor the plant rather than deplete it. We take that seriously, and we think you will too.

Storage

Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Properly kept, dried sage clusters hold their potency and fragrance for a long time — these plants are patient.
