It’s a fair question.

The Historical Use of Lobelia Among Native American Tribes

Lobelia was named for Matthias de L’Obel (1538-1616), a Flemish physician and botanist who served as the personal physician and “Botanist Royal” to King James I. He is known as the first botanist to appreciate the difference between monocotyledons and dicotyledons – monocots typically have fibrous roots that spread in all directions, while dicot roots contain one main taproot. Lobelia is a perennial dicot in the Campanulaceae family.

Lobelia was very popular with numerous Native American tribes. It was a highly regarded medicinal herb, a very popular trading item, and a mode of currency. Several tribes, including the Penobscot, Cherokee, Iroquois, Shoshone and Crow, were reported to use it for a variety of conditions.

The Cherokee were known to mash the roots of Lobelia and use the paste to ease body aches. The Iroquois used it to treat venereal disease, ulcers, and leg sores. Numerous tribes used it as a perspiration inducer. But Lobelia’s most famous property is its ability to be emetic. Often known as puke weed, this herb is used to induce therapeutic vomiting. The Shoshones in particular are one tribe known to blend Lobelia into a tea to be used as a vomit-inducing emetic.

That’s why we don’t recommend smoking Lobelia by itself. A little bit goes a long way. Just a tiny amount of Lobelia is included in each Bear Blend to limit its toxicity.

Lobelia was also used as a relaxant and used to help ease the pain and experience of labor. Nevertheless, we don’t recommend this herb’s use by pregnant women today due to its toxic effects.

Why Lobelia is a Perfect Substitute for Nicotine

One reason we include Lobelia in all Bear Blend smoke aside from Moon is the fact that it contains Lobeline – a pyridine alkaloid very similar to nicotine.

Because Lobelia mimics the body’s response to nicotine without being addictive, it can effectively treat nicotine withdrawal and help you quit smoking cigarettes. Lobelia can also be effective at treating alcoholism as well as a variety of other drug addictions.

Researchers now think that Lobelia may reduce the effect of nicotine on the body, particularly the release of dopamine – a neurotransmitter used by the nervous system to communicate with the body. Dopamine is key to pleasure and plays a key role in how we think, plan, and survive.

How to Pair Lobelia with Cannabis and Tobacco

Mixed throughout Bear Blends aside from Moon, Lobelia can be especially helpful when paired with Cannabis or Tobacco.

When smoked in a marijuana mix, Lobelia can be deeply relaxing, soothing muscles in a way that naturally complements the calming sensation of a Ganja buzz. Lobelia can be especially beneficial at easing cough, soothing lung irritation, and opening the lungs. That’s probably why many Native American tribes used it to treat asthma.

Lobelia also has numerous antidepressant properties that pair well with the mood elevation of Cannabis. Its emotional enhancing effects deliver an outlook of positivity to your buzz. By mixing your Ganja with other herbs including Lobelia, you also preserve your stash by not burning through the marijuana as fast. It’s a more economical approach to weed smoking.

As we mentioned, Lobelia provides a nicotine-like response to the body that’s non-addictive, essentially easing nicotine cravings. That’s why we recommend pairing Bear Blends containing Lobelia with your tobacco. It’s a great way to ease yourself off nicotine and quit smoking tobacco with organic herbal blends.

To quit smoking tobacco with natural herbal smoking blends, we recommend beginning with a 50/50 mix of herbs and tobacco. As your body adjusts to the lower supply of nicotine, add a greater concentration of herbs – building up to 60%, then 80%, and gradually reducing the amount of tobacco in your smoke to zero. Smoking Lobelia mixed with other herbal smoking blends can ease the discomfort of tobacco withdrawal.

Celebrate Responsibly

Like we said, easy does it. Too much Lobelia can be toxic. Like other herbal remedies, listen to your body. It will tell you all you need to know. Smoke herbal blends including Lobelia to feel good. Mix it with Cannabis and tobacco to find the perfect blend that soothes your lungs and relaxes your body without being too much.

Herbs are a gift of the Earth, useful in easing stress, opening the lungs and relaxing the body. Celebrate responsibly, and give your body exactly what it needs. Lobelia is an excellent substitute for tobacco that softens irritability and makes it easier to quit smoking cigarettes. Enjoy!
