Love Cannabis? 5 Groovy Ways to Save on Bud in a Pandemic

Got an elf scraping the bottom of your cannabis jar in the middle of the night?

Guess what? That elf is you. If all that’s left come morning are a few glittery crystal crumbs too small for a mouse to pack a onie, point fingers all you want — your 3 other fingers are pointing right back at you.

It’s okay, stoner. We’ve all been there. And this pandemic’s only making things worse. Few friends, no live music — hell, you’ve barely been out of the house in the past 10 months. Your skin’s crawling; you’re riddled with anxiety, boredom, the low-down-dirty-blues. It’s no wonder you’re hitting the trees like the Jolly Green Giant on a Godzilla rampage.

Personally, I suffer from cannabis use disorder: I couldn’t ever get enough of that buzz. I sprinkled weed on hot dogs, soaked ganja herbal tea balls in my happy hour beer, smoked the bong like it was a mini iron lung. Fortunately, I’m five years sober and counting — riding high on this funky groove called life pax 3 vs mighty.

But believe me, I know how hard it can be to make the weed jar stretch to the next paycheck. And in the era of COVID, payday itself may be an oasis mirage smack in the middle of Death Valley. So many of us are laid off or furloughed. And bloody hell — those cheap Judge Smails lookalikes at the cheeky ass country club tip in loose change.

Here’s how you can make your weed stretch: ride your high, find your peace, and be content — without burning up the paycheck like the stinky ass Dumpster Fire that was 2020.

1. Pair your herb with other herbs

A great way to stretch your stash is to pair your herb with other herbs. Like cheese and fine wine, cannabis pairs nicely with a variety of other herbs: mugwort, passion flower, red raspberry leaf blend deliciously in a pipe. The beauty of this is you get both the benefits of the ganja and whatever herbal cocktail you prefer. Different herbs have a variety of health effects and influences on your mind and spirit. Mugwort inspires lucid dreaming. St. John’s Wart is great for depression and PMS. Yerba Mate instills a nice peppy energy boost.

You can mix herbs with your ganja via the tobaccoless spliff, or you can throw both herbs and cannabis into a grinder for a nice concoction for a bowl or chillum. This saves on your weed, but it also inspires your mind and body. You’ll find yourself more relaxed, content, and blissed out — completely at peace and one with the Earth.

2. Pitch a one hit wonder

With a one hitter, a little weed goes a long way. If you let it, a couple hits of quality ganja can fly you to the sky. The trick is to take a bite and then hold off. Like a good meal, it takes cannabis a little while for the effects to truly reach your brain. Toke a onie and take a few minutes to appreciate the buzz. After a little while, you’ll find you’re as high as you need to be — all with just a pinch of weed.

If you need like four or five solid hits, invest in a quality glass chilm — a one hitter with muscle. Burn just the edge of the bowl and try to catch all the smoke into your lungs so very little escapes. You’ll be riding high off just a morsel of herb, the perfect way to make your stash last.

3. Grow your own Ganja

Money doesn’t grow on trees, but trees do grow in closets. And it grows like a weed after all. In states where it’s legal or medicinal, growing your own is legal. And in states that it’s not? We can’t tell you what to do, but hell — that’s never stopped anybody before.

You can start a simple grow operation in a closet or even a trash can in your basement. Play around with it, experiment. See what your green thumb can do. Guides like Marijuana Horticulture: The Indoor/Outdoor Medical Grower’s Bible will walk you through the process, every step of the way.

4. Save your trim and make a batch of edibles

If you grow or know somebody who grows, save your trim and make your own edibles. Cannabis butter or oil can easily be DIY’d by throwing some chopped trim into a crockpot and simmering it for 8 hours with cooking oil or butter. As my previous stoner ass mentioned above, you can also sprinkle trim on pretty much anything: Turn that spicy curry dish at your favorite Indian joint into a rocketship to high heaven. And yes, you can soak it in a tea ball and put it in coffee, tea, or beer. Get creative: Ganja Frosted Flakes can be a dream come true.

5. Pair Cannabis with Chocolate, Coffee, Mangos…

Quality cannabis is a delicacy. It’s delicious and tantalizes the taste buds of our brain. And its effects can be enhanced with a number of tasty treats and beverages.

Dark chocolate is known for hitting the brain’s sweet spot — it releases anandamide, the chemical in the brain known as the “bliss molecule,” which nicely complements the happy high of THC and makes it stronger.  Over-ripe mangoes are rich in myrcene, a terpene believed to increase THC’s effect on the brain, resulting in a stronger buzz.

And there’s nothing like a bowl and a cup of Joe: Coffee has been scientifically proven to extend the life of your high. A little caffeine gives a buzz some pep. In this scientific study, squirrel monkeys given caffeine had higher cannabinoid binding properties. I can just picture those cute little fellas now, chilling in a lab — a joint in one hand, cup of Starbucks in another.

Save your stash. Stretching your cannabis is easier than you think. As Walter Sobchak tells the Dude, “If you will it, it is no dream.” After all, you are the Walrus.
